Our Story

Born from Survival,
Built on Purpose

"Humura" means be comforted in Kinyarwanda. Since 2001, we have been a survivor-led community in Ottawa dedicated to remembrance, healing, and action — keeping truth alive so justice can prevail.

Founded by survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Humura Association has grown from a small support circle into a recognized community organization serving the Ottawa-Gatineau region. We work with survivors, youth, educators, and community partners to ensure the memory of the genocide is preserved with dignity — and that its lessons reach future generations.

🕯 Memory
Commemorations, testimonies, and education that keep truth alive.
💙 Healing
Culturally informed support and safe spaces for survivors.
🌱 Youth
Building the next generation of leaders rooted in unity.
⚖️ Justice
Confronting denial and advocating for human rights.
What Drives Us

Our Core Values

🕯
Memory
We hold the names, the stories, and the faces of the 800,000 who were taken. Memory is not a burden — it is a covenant. We carry it with intention, year after year.
⚖️
Justice
We stand against denial and distortion. We advocate for accountability and for the dignity of survivors everywhere. Justice is not just legal — it is moral, social, and historical.
🌱
Life
Survivors do not only survive — they live, love, create, and lead. We celebrate this resilience and ensure that hope is not just a word but a lived reality in our community.
🤝
Community
We are stronger together. Our programs, events, and spaces are built by and for our community — a tapestry of generations, backgrounds, and stories united in purpose.
💙
Healing
Trauma is real. We never minimize it. Through mental health support, cultural care, and community connection, we create conditions where survivors can thrive on their own terms.
🎙
Truth
Education is the foundation of prevention. We believe every generation must learn the truth of what happened — so that silence, denial, and indifference are never permitted to win.
